What is abdominoplasty

If you are considering abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure is designed to produce a flat abdomen.

The trade-off is a scar that extends from hip to hip and a second scar around the belly button. Dr. Hosn devotes meticulous care and artistry to creating a flat stomach with a natural-appearing belly button, and to placing the abdominal scar low enough to stay hidden beneath a bathing suit bottom or underwear.

Are you a candidate?

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men and women with a large fat deposit and loose abdominal skin that has not responded to diet or exercise. The surgery also helps women whose abdominal muscles and skin have been stretched by pregnancy, including those with separated abdominal muscles, a condition known as diastasis recti. Patients planning significant weight loss should complete it first, and women planning future pregnancies should wait, since the vertical muscles tightened during surgery can separate again.

Stable weight

Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure. Patients planning significant weight loss should complete it first, since results hold best at a weight you can maintain.

Loose skin and fat

The procedure targets excess abdominal skin and fat that diet and exercise will not correct, particularly when the skin has lost its ability to retract on its own.

Good overall health

Patients considering this procedure should be in good general health without conditions that would impair healing or increase surgical risk significantly.

Realistic expectations

The procedure improves abdominal shape and firmness in exchange for a hip-to-hip scar. Patients who understand that trade-off clearly report the highest satisfaction with their results.

What to expect

Dr. Hosn performs two versions of this procedure, and which one suits you is decided at consultation.

Types of Tummy Tucks Offered

  • Full abdominoplasty addresses the entire abdomen, above and below the belly button. It is performed at a hospital with an overnight stay for comfort and monitoring.
  • Mini abdominoplasty targets the lower abdomen only. It is performed on an outpatient basis at a fully accredited outpatient surgery center.

Surgery takes two to five hours under general anesthesia depending on which approach is used and how much work is involved.

Excess skin and fat are removed, the vertical abdominal muscles are tightened, and the belly button is repositioned so it sits naturally on the new contour. Scars are placed as low and as discreetly as the anatomy allows. Most patients return to work in two to three weeks, resume light exercise at three to four weeks, and return to full activity at six weeks or more, with final results settling between six and twelve months as swelling resolves.

Planning your consultation

In your initial consultation, Dr. Hosn will spend the time needed to understand your goals, perform a complete examination, and make recommendations tailored to your anatomy. Our office is committed to educating every patient on the risks, benefits, and alternatives of this procedure.

Dr. Hosn will listen to your goals, assess your skin quality and the degree of muscle separation, and recommend whether a full or mini abdominoplasty is the better fit. The typical patient meets with him three times before proceeding, ensuring expectations are clearly defined and the plan is right for you before any commitment is made.
