What is breast augmentation

If you are considering breast augmentation

Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breast using implants. A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or a salt-water solution known as saline.

Dr. Hosn typically places the implants behind the chest muscle, with incisions made around the areola or in the breast fold so that scarring stays discreet. Implant type, size, profile, and placement are decided together during your consultation, matched to your frame and to the result you want.

Are you a candidate?

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women who are physically healthy, non-smokers, and realistic in their expectations, looking for improvement rather than perfection. Most patients come to Dr. Hosn for one of four reasons.

Increase breast size

Implants add volume and projection for women whose breasts are naturally smaller than they would like, sized to suit your frame rather than to hit a number.

Restore lost volume

Pregnancy and nursing often leave the breasts smaller or less full than they were. Implants can restore the volume and shape you had before.

Correct asymmetry

Most women have some difference between the two sides. Implants of differing size or profile can bring the breasts into closer balance.

Reconstruction after cancer

Breast augmentation also has a reconstructive role, rebuilding shape, volume, and symmetry after breast cancer surgery.

What to expect

Breast augmentation usually takes one and a half to two hours under general anesthesia, and is typically performed in an accredited outpatient surgical center. Implants are placed through small incisions around the areola or in the breast fold, most often behind the chest muscle.

Most patients return to work in about two weeks, resume light exercise at three weeks, and return to full activity at six weeks or more. Swelling settles and the implants soften into their final position over the following months, with final results typically visible at twelve months. Procedure, recovery, and results will vary from patient to patient.

Planning your consultation

In your initial consultation, Dr. Hosn will spend the time needed to understand your goals, perform a complete examination, and make recommendations tailored to your anatomy. Our office is committed to educating every patient on the risks, benefits, and alternatives of this procedure.

The typical patient meets with Dr. Hosn three times before proceeding with any major procedure. That matters especially for breast surgery, where the sizing conversation defines your expectations for breast size and shape well before any commitment is made. Those visits are where you try different sizes, review before-and-after photographs, and settle on implant type and placement together.
